What happens to the quotes nobody says no to?

Won and lost are easy. The interesting pile is the one in the middle: quotes that were never answered, never chased and never closed.

Ask a business what their win rate is and you'll get a number. Ask what happened to the quotes that were neither won nor lost and you'll usually get a pause.

They're not rejections. Nobody said no. The customer went quiet, the job got postponed, the person who asked left, and the quote sat there gently ageing until someone marked the whole lot as lost in a tidy-up.

What we think is going on

  • -The follow-up depends on one person remembering
  • -After about ten days it feels awkward to chase, so nobody does
  • -The quote is in one system and the conversation is in another

We're building something small that watches the middle pile and nudges at sensible moments, in a tone that doesn't sound like a debt collector. Before we go further we'd like to know what people currently do, if anything.
